We played two games today and didn't finish either of them - but still had a good time. Karen and Michelle joined KC this time -definitely the high point of the day. We played Iron Dragon until KC, Karen and Michelle had to leave. We tried to play it quickly (I wasn't ever in the possession of much down time) but it still took longer than I had hoped. We seemed to be close to a resolution and then we hit a huge string of events that made it clear things were going to go longer. I've played a lot of crayon rail games and have never seen so many events in play at the same time.
After they departed we broke out Merchant of Venus, playing about 1/3 of it before deciding we had gotten the gist of it and were tired. The new version is not the same as the old one - it wouldn't be new if it was! Using the same approach to playing it as the original game doesn't work that well, so there are new tactics to learn. In general the movement process is more chaotic and unpredictable and new tactics will need to be discovered for bringing this variability under control. The new bits are so much better, especially the ships that can be pointed in a direction (in addition to looking cool). I am still concerned that it will see limited play time if they don't come out with an expansion to allow it to be played by up to 6.
Thanks for the snacks, Rick!
Upcoming Plans:
1. Remember, there is no face-to-face session in December. The next session is tentatively scheduled for 1/12, however feedback on availability could change this. Please let me know if you can or cannot be there on the 12th.
2. We will, however, have a Yucata real-time gaming evening during December. I will soon be sending out an inquiry about scheduling it. If you have not played in these sessions before and are interested, please shoot me an e-mail.
3. In January we will also have a BSW evening. More to follow on that after the Yucata plans are well in hand.
4. The theme for January is new games (as in "What did Santa bring?").
