Todays big event was KC joining us! Welcome! Oh, and we played a few games.
The theme for the day was co-op games. We started with two games of 3 each of advanced Forbidden Island. One was won and the other was lost. All agreed that the additional cards and layouts made things much more interesting. Next we played one 4 person game of Defenders of the Realm (a very close loss) while Rick and Dave taught themselves the Star Trek Expeditions co-op game (we won, but on the easiest setting). This game has gotten a lot of praise for the chrome and only so-so reviews as a game. Since the chrome is the young/movie Star Trek I wasn't as impressed with it as others. On the other hand I didn't think it was that bad of a game when taken from the point of view that it was designed by Reiner Knizia (so there's going to be a lot of math). My biggest criticism of it is that it is physically bigger than it needs to be. We ended the day by playing half way through a learning game of Eclipse. This is definitely a keeper. For me it "Jones Theories" Twilight Imperium right into the trash - Eclipse scratches the same itch but is both more fun and shorter. I expect we'll be seeing more of it.
At this point the October game day will most likely be 10/13 or 10/20 - with 10/13 having the edge right now. We have to figure out some travel plans before I'll know for sure. If you would like to influence the choice, please let me know. I'll announce the firm date as soon as possible.
Thanks to Marty for the snacks today! Thanks to KC for donating to the soda pool.
